How to Strengthen Drilling Safety Offshore with InteCheck

InteCheck operates in high-stakes offshore environments with one clear focus of reducing risk. In the energy industry, small oversights can escalate quickly. Equipment compatibility, clear verification steps and proper sign-off procedures are critical to protecting people, assets and operations.

During a recent drilling operation, a serious risk was identified involving elevator inserts. If incorrect inserts are fitted, there is potential for loss of grip and a high-risk lifting event. The issue was identified before it resulted in harm but it exposed a gap in the existing verification process. It relied too heavily on manual checks and inconsistent documentation.

The client needed immediate action and a solution that would prevent it from happening again.

The Rapid Intebloc Response

Once notified, our team acted straight away. Within hours, our Intebloc team configured and deployed a dedicated Digital checklist for Elevator Inserts through the InteCheck system.

The aim was to introduce an additional layer of oversight to support the drilling operation which is straightforward for crews to follow and provides a clear audit trail.

Using InteCheck, we built a tailored workflow that allowed the customer to:

  • Validate elevator type, insert size, OD, throat measurements and load rating
  • Capture images of each insert directly from the device
  • Confirm matching serial numbers across all inserts
  • Apply digital sign-off by the drill crew and driller
  • Automatically store a secure, auditable record accessible onshore
  • Trigger direct notification to the supervising Toolpusher

Now the functionality is part of routine operations. The client uses it every day, embedding additional verification into each relevant lift.

This has delivered:

  • Elimination of insert-related mismatches
  • Clear, photo-verified assurance before lifting begins
  • Standardisation across shifts and crews
  • Immediate supervisor visibility and review
  • Stronger accountability through digital records

Most importantly, it has increased the overall level of safety across the drilling operation.

Near misses often reveal weaknesses that paper-based systems cannot properly control. But with acting quickly and putting the right safeguards in place, the safety of people and assets is protected.

InteCheck provided a practical digital control that adds oversight without adding complexity. And that safeguard is now being used every single day.
